Fiji, Done Right: The Stopover That Becomes the Highlight

For most North American travellers, Fiji is a dot on the map somewhere between home and Australia or New Zealand – a place to break up a long flight, stretch your legs, and catch some sun before the “real” trip continues.

Our founder, Leora Rothschild, just returned from a research trip across Fiji’s outer islands, and her message is simple: rethink Fiji as a layover. Done properly, it’s not a pause in your journey -it’s the moment the whole trip shifts into another gear.

The Difference Is in the Islands, Not the Idea

Fiji looks straightforward from a brochure: white sand, turquoise water, a resort with a pool. But Leora’s biggest takeaway from the trip was how dramatically the experience changes depending on where you actually stay.

Stay on the mainland near Nadi, and you’ll have a few perfectly nice days. Make the extra effort to reach Fiji’s smaller, more remote islands, and you find something else entirely – secluded beaches, extraordinary marine life, and a stillness that’s hard to describe until you’ve felt it. As Leora put it after visiting two very different island properties on this trip: when it’s done well, Fiji is pure magic. When it isn’t, it’s just… nice.

That gap – between nice and unforgettable – is exactly what a well-planned itinerary is designed to close.

What’s Actually Down There / What You Can Expect

The headline experience of this trip was the water/ocean. Leora described snorkelling among some of the world’s best soft coral reefs, and one moment in particular stayed with her: swimming alongside roughly a dozen manta rays as they circled gracefully overhead – the kind of encounter that reorders your sense of what a beach holiday can be.

The islands themselves surprised her too. Arriving by seaplane onto a private atoll, watching the resort appear below as a kind of secluded sanctuary, is an experience no photo quite captures. And the flight home was its own memory: pilots skimming low beneath the clouds at sunset, mountains rolling beneath the wings, the whole cabin quietly wishing the flight wouldn’t end.

It’s Not Just for Couples

One misconception about Fiji’s private islands is that they’re built purely for romance. Leora found the opposite to be just as true: these are exceptional multigenerational destinations. One property she stayed at functioned almost like its own small village – winding paths, golf carts, several restaurants, a games centre, pickleball and tennis courts, a full range of water sports, and only a couple of dozen residences on the whole island. There was always something for every age group to do, and just as easily, always the option to do nothing at all.

This is the part of the planning that matters most: matching the resort to the traveller. A couple chasing quiet luxury and a family of twelve spanning three generations need very different islands, even within Fiji. Get that match right, and everything else – the pace, the food, the mood of the trip – falls into place.

Why It Works So Well as a Stopover

For guests flying from North America to Australia or New Zealand, Fiji sits almost perfectly along the way – which makes it easy to underuse. Treated as a genuine stop rather than a layover, it becomes something else: a chance to shake off the flight, slip into island time, and arrive at your final destination already relaxed instead of jet-lagged. And on the way home, it’s the reverse – the perfect final chapter to a big trip, a few days of quiet luxury before you’re back to real life.

Once you’re on the right island, the rhythm does the rest. Slow mornings, extraordinary snorkelling, long lunches, an afternoon with a book by the pool. As Leora described her own days there: wake, move a little, eat well, get in the water, rest, repeat. It’s a simple formula, and it works.

The Rothschild Beyond Approach

Our advice, echoing Leora’s from the ground: don’t compromise on quality to add extra nights. A shorter stay at the right resort will always outshine a longer one at the wrong resort. The islands, the service, the craftsmanship of a truly exceptional property – these are the details that turn a good trip into the one you’re already planning to repeat before you’ve even left.

Fiji rewards travellers who go a little farther and choose a little more carefully. That’s where the magic actually is.
